Abstract (en)

First publication is a catalogue of the early 19th c. drawings in the Mannheim Kunsthalle, including a significant collection of works by Friedrich. Second publication is the catalogue of an American exhibition of works by Friedrich from the Hermitage (Leningrad) and Pushkin Museum (Moscow). Koerner's book addresses two main issues: Friedrich's concern for emphasizing the spiritual in art; and his manner of relating the spectator to the picture, especially the use of figures seen from the back.
