Discusses the serious economic and cultural harm that art counterfeiters cause and examines the public response to counterfeit art. Notes the popular tendency to glorify fakers and ignore the bad that they cause. Argues that success in protecting the social and cultural interests subverted by counterfeit art depends on a better educated art public who will take this problem seriously. Examines existing United States criminal statutes and their application to the problem of counterfeit art. Also considers the problem of disposing of counterfeits.
