Discusses various theories for the origin of sock giving as an English Christmas custom. In addition to possible antique sources, considers the cult of S. Einkel and his relic socks at Cologne cathedral, plus a pair of 9th c. Viking socks patterned with a green conifer motif which were recently discovered in York.
