Abstract (en)
Interdisciplinary collection of essays arising from a symposium at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, representing diverse perspectives on 20th c. German art in its political and social context. The focus is on cultural production, applying both social history and critical theory to an investigation of the visual arts. Arranged in four groups, the essays draw attention to the cultural continuities and disjunctures of the period. The first set looks at the issue of cultural disruption on a social, political and conceptual level; the second addresses the effects of the representation of gender on the continuity of cultural history; the third highlights variants within the historical patterns of patronage; finally, considers the centrality of the city in German social and cultural theory and its visual representation.
