An analysis of the symbolism of the frescoes in the Gray Hall at Kalmar castle, Sweden, painted 1584-85 by the Netherlandish painter Arent Lambrechts. States they were commissioned by King Johan III in order to explain and justify his war with and victory over Ivan IV of Russia.
