Examines the current appeal of installation and site-specific art, noting its dual ability to function as a means of deconstructing the museum or reconstructing it. Discusses the heritage and contemporary meaning of installation works in relation to examples in two recent exhibitions: Dislocations, Museum of Modern Art, New York, organized by the Museum's new curator Robert Storr; and Carnegie International 1991, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.
