Traces the genealogy of the pinup girl (soft-core visual pornography), finding its origins in certain pictorial conventions of late 19th c. academic painting involving the depiction of the female nude: two nude women set side by side; a nude woman staring at her own reflection in a mirror or a pool; women in carnal relationships with animals. Explores parallels in imagery and purpose between the kitsch Venus of Victorian academic painting and the current pinup girl.
