Discusses a red chalk drawing in the British Museum, London. Reviews past research, then compares its style and technique to other Rembrandt chalk composition studies to see whether the date of 1630 is credible. Concludes a date of 1635 is more likely. Proposes that, in writing 1630, Rembrandt referred not to the time of the drawing's execution but to the year of Jan Lievens's etching The Raising of Lazarus which he was copying. Argues that Rembrandt modified the sketch to serve as the basis for his own painting of the Entombment which was completed in 1639 (Munich, Alte Pinakothek).
