Examines three primary functions of cartoons in the oeuvre of Perino del Vaga, focusing especially on their use as demonstration pieces. Discusses the lost cartoons representing S. Andrew and the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand, 1522-1523, known from Vasari's biography of the artist (both unrealized), and argues that the purpose of these demonstration cartoons was to challenge or emulate the achievement of other masters, in particular Masaccio and Michelangelo.
