Abstract (en)
Discusses a group of six French 17th c. embroidered hangings which the curator of the Château de Versailles recommended for purchase (without success) in 1852. Four were acquired in 1946 by the Metropolitan Museum (New York); in 1965 one went to the Banque de France (Paris) and another to Versailles. Subjects are identified as Portrait of Louis XIV with Allegory of Air; Portrait of the Duc du Maine with the Allegory of Fire; Portrait of Mademoiselle de Nantes as Spring; Portrait of Mademoiselle de Blois as Summer; Allegory of Peace with Portraits of Mademoiselle de Blois and the Duc de Chartres or the Comte de Toulouse; and Allegory of War.
