Discusses the expression "nostalgie de la boue" (nostalgia for mud, slumming, yearning to wallow in what is low and filthy) in relation to its recent use in the exhibition catalogue, High and low: modern art and popular culture, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and in a book by Andrew Ross on intellectuals and popular culture. Notes that while the two accounts invoke nostalgia to disqualify the objects of their critique--surrealism in the first case and the historical avant-garde in the second--from a proper relation to the matter of popular culture, they both end up putting a positive spin on the concept of nostalgia.
