Abstract (en)
Analysis of Hans von Aachen's Venus and Adonis, proposing that it was painted in Italy in 1585. Examines its style in relation to copies and related drawings and to works by Hans Speckaert, Joseph Heintz, and Hendrick de Clerck. Examines the influence of various Italian treatments of the theme, especially Titian's (Washington, National Gallery of Art). Discusses the iconography in relation to Ovid's account in the Metamorphoses. Appendix comments on the attribution of two copies of von Aachen's Three Graces (Braunschweig, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum.)
