Discusses a painting of the Crucifixion signed by Frans Francken II (Hannover, Niedersächsisches Landesgalerie) in relation to several anonymous versions of the same composition, all of which apparently depend on a lost prototype (possibly two prototypes) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Speculates on the role of Bosch in the invention of the original idea. Proposes that the figure of the old man in the hollow of a tree at the lower right represents S. Bavo, and relates the iconography to the events of 1559, in which year Bruegel's work may have been commissioned.
