Abstract (en)
Account of the design of the sepulchral monument for Albrecht Ludwig von Berger and Christian Daniel von Finckh, political activists who were executed in Bremen by the occupational French forces on April 10, 1813. Carl Slevogt was commissioned by Peter, Herzog von Oldenburg, to design the tomb, which was originally planned as a pylon-shaped monument surmounted by an angel. Following the influence, intervention, and lobbying of various individuals (Johann Gottfried Schadow, Wilhelm Tischbein, Ivan Martos, Johann Heinrich von Dannecker), a temple design by Slevogt was finally approved in 1821, and Franz Anton Högl was selected to execute the sculptural elements. The tomb was erected 1821-24 in the Gertrudenfriedhof, Oldenburg. Appendix with relevant correspondence, including letters by Tischbein, Schadow, and the duke.
