Abstract (en)
Study of the life-size plaster sculpture, exhibited at the Salon of 1801 (now destroyed), based on a terra-cotta study, 1800, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Traces Clodion's sources in antique and 18th c. sculpture, and 17th-18th c. painting, and shows the evolution of the group from its early, classical style to its final, romanticized form. Reviews the iconography of the flood in 18th c. French art, and relates it to the contemporary fascination with geology. Notes that the Deluge represents Clodion's attempt to create a "modern" sculpture, but that since the work was never executed in marble, it had only limited influence on later artists.
