Abstract (en)
Examines the decorative programs of three important Italian state halls, 14th-16th cs., and argues that the art not only reflects political messages, but also constructs and contests ideology. Shows how the hall of state and its fresco decoration differed from regime to regime, through a detailed study of the following examples: Ambrogio Lorenzetti's frescoes for the Sala dei Nove, Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, from the 14th c. civic republic; the frescoes of Andrea Mantegna in the Camera Picta (Camera degli Sposi) Castello S. Giorgio, Mantua, reflecting the princely court of the 15th c.; and Giorgio Vasari's work in the Sala Grande (Salone dei Cinquecento), Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, representing the absolutist state of the 16th c. Includes in appendices transcriptions and translations of the inscriptions from the Sala dei Nove, by Ruggero Stefanini, and diagram legends from the Sala Grande, translated by William S. Anderson.
