Exhibition organized by Jesús Fuenmayor, Kate Haug, and Frazer Ward, fellows in the 1991-1992 Whitney Museum Independent Study Program; Cara Mertes organized an accompanying video program. Examines the cultural definitions of women in the United States, especially the relationship between women's lives and domesticity, using historical and contemporary documentary and "post-documentary" photography, advertisements, video and three-dimensional art. Explores notions of femininity, cleanliness, the home, domestic labor, dirt, and patriarchal oppression in relation to this visual documentation. Catalogue includes essays by Ward, Haug, and Mertes.
