Abstract (en)
Reassessment of the Bay Area Figurative movement, which developed in the northern California San Francisco Bay Area, 1950-1965. The movement is characterized by a union of figurative subject matter with Abstract Expressionist paint handling and formal compositional concerns, and portrays physical attributes associated with California, often depicting pastoral or suburban subjects. Highlights the work of 10 artists representative of the three stages of the movement's development: painters David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, James Weeks, Nathan Oliveira, Paul Wonner, Theophilus Brown, Bruce McGaw, Joan Brown; sculptor Manuel Neri.
