Investigates an empirical approach to making art that has developed over the past 30 years. Brings together works infused with social, political, or scientific content by a diverse group of American and European artists, unified in their use of direct observation and experience as the basis for artistic inquiry. Some 20 artists are represented including Joseph Beuys, Hamish Fulton, David Ireland, Yves Klein, Wolfgang Laib, Liz Larner, Richard Long, Ana Mendieta, and Robert Smithson.
