Abstract
(en)
Discusses Manet's 1870 portrait of Berthe Morisot known as Repose (Providence, Rhode Island School of Design, Museum of Art), reflecting on 1873 criticism which found the picture "indecent." Relates the painting to the 18th-19th c. iconographic tradition of a woman in a relaxed posture on a sofa. Argues that Manet pushed his image toward the character of an erotic fantasy piece with slightly immoral overtones--pushed not very far, but far enough to disturb a rigidly coded protocol.
