Abstract (en)
Argues that Berthe Morisot produced images of herself that begin to clarify what "self" might mean in a feminine case, and that these meanings acquire even fuller dimensions when compared with painted images of Morisot made by her sister Edma and her colleague Edouard Manet. Discusses paintings, prints and drawings by Morisot, and her use of pictures-within-pictures. Concludes: "No one kind of portrait could suffice to understand this woman's conception of herself. It is the many--of a sister's faith, of inner conflict, of silent dependence, of eloquent pride, and of analytical citation--that together record Morisot's historical condition."
