Abstract (en)
Discusses Morisot's painting of 1879 (private collection) as representing two working women confronting each other across the body of "their" child--in both cases producing a product (the milk, the painting) for profit. Argues that the ambiguities in the picture may have as much to do with the contradictions inscribing contemporary mythologies of work and leisure and with the way that ideologies of gender intersect with these paired notions as they do with Morisot's personal feelings and attitudes.
