Notes that although the composite capital occurs in Italian architectural theory and practice in the 15th and early 16th cs. and in the writings of Vitruvius, the order did not exist as such. Suggests that Peruzzi may have invented it, and examines Serlio's role in formulating and establishing it as the fifth architectural order. Finally, examines the composite order in France after Serlio (e.g., Philibert de l'Orme).
