Surveys Lombard sculpture, mainly in the region of Pavia, late 6th to late 8th cs. Notes evidence, on the part of both the Lombard and Roman peoples, of adaptation and the formation of a new entity. Examples studied include the capitals in the crypt of S. Eusebio, Pavia; dispersed fragments of architectural decoration from the palace of Liutprand in Corteolona; and architectural sculpture in S. Colombano, Bobbio.
