Proposes that the 12th c. mosaics in the Cappella Palatina conform to an integrated program with two basic themes: the religious justification of Roger II's monarchy and commemoration of his Christmas coronation. Thus the mosaic program is not a provincial pastiche of half-understood Byzantine and Early Christian models, as previously claimed; instead it conforms to Norman political-religious ideas rooted in the Frankish monarchical tradition.
