Abstract (en)
Examines the relevance of the theme of "woman as victim" for the artists of the French Resistance during World War II, focusing on Eluard and Laurens. Cites Eluard's book of poems, La dernière nuit (1942) and its frontispiece, an etching by Laurens depicting the murder of a woman, here seen as symbolizing the murder of France by Germany. Discusses Laurens's sculptures of the period which also present small, cowering, crouching female figures, seen in direct contrast to the fascist ideal of the monumental standing male figure.
