Provides a brief historical survey of developments in Irish stamp design, 1922-1989; notes that the Cabinet approves all designs before they are released, acting as the arbiter of the country's cultural profile. Goes on to analyze semiotic systems operative in Irish stamp design, and comments on what these suggest about the Irish national identity, and on the role of artists.
