As a study of the relationship of architectural production to the community in which it emerged, compares two churches in London--S. James, Piccadilly, by Wren, and Christ Church, Spitalfields, by Hawksmoor--in terms of the political and religious ideological conflict in English society, 1660-1714. Also discusses the contrast between Wren's and Vanbrugh's views on church style, with respect to the 1711 Commission for Building Fifty New Churches.
