Argues that the inscription "Rowlandas Locky / 1530 or 1532" on the version of Holbein's group portrait of the family of Thomas More at Nostell Priory is an 18th c. addition; concludes that the painting is autograph, and draws attention to hidden meanings. Suggests that the man in the doorway represents John Clement and that Clement was really Richard, duke of York, whose murder on orders of Richard III was fabricated by More for political reasons. Interprets the painting as a message to posterity from Holbein concerning More and the Tudor plan of deception.
