Abstract (en)
From disparate sources, reconstructs the personality of Pietro Monte, a Spanish scholar and man-of-action who for many years lived in Italy. Monte has to his credit the first printed treatise on wrestling; the earliest surviving printed system of fencing; the first significant treatment in print of mounted combat; the first printed description of the art of vaulting; and the earliest printed encyclopedia of arms and armor. Identifies him as the "Pietro Monti" referred to by Leonardo in one of the latter's notebooks ca.1497-1499. Cites Monte's voluminous Collectanea (Milan, 1509) as containing the treatise on fencing referred to in early sources and long thought to be lost.
