Abstract
(en)
Traces the history of the cult of the Archangel Michael on the peninsula of Gargano, where a shrine was built, perhaps as early as the 5th c., on the site of an early apparition of the saint. Illustrates works of art, 11th-15th cs., depicting this apparition. Discusses the Byzantine and Lombard periods, when the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo became the most famous pilgrimage site devoted to S. Michael in the Latin West. Examines the influence of the architecture on other rock-cut sanctuaries devoted to the saint in Italy (7th-10th cs.), France (Le Mont-Saint-Michel, founded 8th c.) and elsewhere in Europe. Summarizes the results of excavations and of research on the inscriptions (6th-9th cs., including runes).
