Ten essays (seven delivered as lectures at Pennsylvania State University, 1986-87) on disparate subjects from the period ca.1840-1940, including not only public architecture but private ecclesiastical structures and commercial buildings, rural cemeteries, and water supply systems. The reviewer draws attention to economic considerations, especially with respect to high-rise commercial buildings in Chicago, and comments on the issue of an American style. Architects discussed include Van Brunt, Richardson, and Wright.
