In connection with John Moffitt's discussion of the picture-within-the-picture in Pacheco's (destroyed) S. Sebastian Healed by S. Irene (Art bulletin, 1990, 72, no 4, Dec, p. 631-638), Steinberg draws attention to a passage he wrote in 1978 on the reuse of pictorial motifs, in which he not only identified the source of the picture-within-the-picture (an engraving by Jan Muller after Hans von Aachen's Martyrdom of S. Sebastian) but also attributed the introduction of the device to Pacheco's pupil, Velázquez. He also reports William J. Chiego's discovery of a source for the Currier and Ives print, Descent from the Cross.
