Examines the origins and cultural context of historiated paintings in Italy in the 13th c., relating the proliferation of historiated dossals of saints to the establishment of papal control over canonization in 1234 and the subsequent institutionalization of sainthood. Draws attention to the shift in 13th c. perceptions of sanctity, comparing Berlinghieri's dossal of S. Francis, 1235 (Pescia, S. Francesco) with the anonymous mid-13th c. S. Francis dossal in S. Croce, Florence. Focuses on the dossal of S. Clare by the S. Chiara Master in S. Chiara, Assisi, to explore the effects of hagiographical and pictorial conventions of the representation of saints in Duecento art.
