Abstract (en)
The reviewer briefly discusses Pope-Hennessy's book and Antonio Paolucci's essay on Titian's portraits, finding the former a standard text and the latter limited and unoriginal. She focuses on Campbell's book and concludes that while his approach can produce enlightening results, it is difficult to accept his omniscient stance, his assumed intimacy with the artist, and his assumption that there is a science of portrait painting that can be understood through a mixture of personal experience and intuition.
