Abstract (en)
The reviewer finds that both these books dealing with Latin and Anglo-Saxon texts and visual images, bring together the materials that will allow an assessment of the relations between media, by subject, to be made for two central themes of Anglo-Saxon devotional life, the cult of Mary and the theology of the Crucifixion. The reviewer focuses on aspects of the iconography of Mary in 10th and 11th c. English illuminated manuscripts and ivories, and on the iconography of Longinus and Stephaton in a group of 10th and 11th c. Anglo-Saxon ivory Crucifixion plaques and related images in manuscripts.
