Abstract (en)
Study of Renaissance style in Portuguese architecture under the patronage of João II, Manuel I, and João III. Chapter 1 examines the relationship of Portugal to Italian art in the 15th c., focusing on the Florentine taste of João II and presenting new evidence confirming Sansovino's presence in Portugal (1492-1501). Chapter 2 discusses innovations in military architecture in the 15th and 16th cs. and covers the policies of Manuel I and the activity of the architects Boytac and the Arrudas in North Africa. Chapter 3 is a study of antique revival architecture in Evora, 1532-37, and of the activity of Chantarene in Portugal. Finally, chapter 4 discusses João de Castilho and the Convento de Cristo in Tomar.
