Reexamines the iconography of the painting by Terbrugghen in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, in light of pentimenti revealed by x-rays, particularly the addition of the ape and the table. Argues that the ape was added to clarify the meaning of the painting: not only is he an allusion to the sense of taste and a comment on the lust and intemperance represented by the woman, but he illustrates for the viewer the dangers of imitating those who give in to the baser instincts.
