Argues that probate inventories provide evidence for the existence of numerous longhouses [housebarns] in poorer arable areas of the Vale of York, and contain details about functions and fittings of byre-ends of such houses. Some surviving buildings, hitherto regarded as standard Vale of York types, are reinterpreted as longhouses.
