Reviews the theories on the origin and date of the Binnenhof, the former residence of the counts of Holland and the nucleus of modern The Hague. Argues that building started already under count Floris IV, including parts of Ridderzaal. The present Ridderzaal was begun under Willem II, and finished under his son Floris V.
