Abstract (en)

On the basis of technical analysis, including x-rays and infrared reflectography, and a study of the painting's provenance, identifies the Madonna dei garofani in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland (Alnwick Castle, Northumberland) as the original by Raphael, and dates the work to 1507-1508. Compares the panel to representations of the subject by other artists as well as to related subjects in Raphael's oeuvre. Includes a list of old copies of the work.
