Hypothesizes that the bronze doors by Barisano of Trani in the western portal of the cathedral of Monreale included figures of men fighting with shields and clubs, similar to those on the doors he executed for the cathedrals of Ravello and Trani; and argues that at Monreale these figures, representing the judicial duel of Lombard law, would have pertained to the ambitions of the Norman king William II in the contest over the throne of the Byzantine empire.
