Discusses a type of mid-16th c. English icon portrait of Christ in profile with a lengthy inscription filling the lower half of the image. Both image and inscription, it is here argued, derive from one of a series of medals produced in Rome in the 1490s. These medal portraits of Christ bore a Latin inscription saying they derived from an emerald intaglio with portraits of Christ and S. Paul sent to Pope Innocent VIII by Bajazet II. There is no record of the intaglio's existence.
