Documentary evidence and archaeological finds suggest that a Norman church stood within the present churchyard and that the hamlet was closer to the church than it is now. Sherds of mid- and early Saxon pottery hint at a still earlier establishment of this settlement. Evidence suggests a radical alteration to the hamlet in the 13th c.
