Reviews Christian, mystical and political interpretations of Caspar David Friedrich's Two Men Contemplating the Moon, 1819-1820 (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie), and suggests that these readings overlook the primary, romantic theme of the painting, which is that of contemplative observation.
