Surveys the evolution of art history in Poland from the end of World War II to the present, focusing on the waxing and waning influence of communism and its political and cultural imperatives. Discusses centers of learning, individual specialists and their fields, publishers and publishing, and changing methodologies (dialectical materialism, iconology, structuralism). Deplores the emigration of many younger Polish art historians, and pleads for more frequent publication of Polish art history in the so-called "conference languages" to enhance its accessibility.
