Abstract (en)

A recent mini-retrospective of Willem de Kooning's paintings, 1940-1984, at Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, New York, prompts these thoughts on the singular power of the artist's early paintings, 1930s-1950s, achieved through the overlay of revisions and the resultant tense dialogue between form and meaning.
