Abstract (en)

Interpretive investigation of Jasper Johns's latest series of untitled paintings (1990), shown at the Castelli Gallery, New York (16 Feb-9 Mar 1991), discussed in relation to earlier series of works from the 1980s which contain hidden imagery, including those based on Picasso's 1936 painting Straw Hat with Blue Leaf (Paris, Musée Picasso), and those related to Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece (Colmar, Musée d'Unterlinden). Does not conclusively identify an iconographic source for the mystery image in this most recent series, but concludes that the identity of the image concealed is biographically important, and that the act of concealment itself is biographically even more significant.
