Abstract (en)
Examines the relationship between verse 1:12 from the Song of Solomon ("My beloved is to me a bag of myrrh, that lies between my breasts") and Pietà images (Vesperbilder) in paintings, manuscript illuminations, and prints, 15th-17th cs. Demonstrates that the verse was understood to refer to the relationship of Mary and Christ and was often included in the images as an inscription. Argues that these were not simply devotional images but were intended to guide the faithful to imitatio Christi. Discusses references to the verse and its typological meaning in various texts, 8th-15th cs., 19 of which are reproduced in an appendix.
