On an ornamental silver dagger and sheath, 1580-85, bearing the marks of the Cologne goldsmith Gillis Sibricht (Cologne, Kölnisches Stadtmuseum). Compares Sibricht's dagger to two other mid 16th c. northern European examples, and discusses depictions, primarily German, of similar daggers in paintings, prints, drawings, and ceramic figures. Identifies sources in prints by Jost Amman for the sheath reliefs depicting a fashionable man and woman on horseback, a soldier, a drummer, and a flutist. Discusses Sibricht's biography and additional works.
